Coffee Makers History Week

Hamilton Beach Manufacturing Company

Founded in 1910, the Hamilton Beach Manufacturing Company resulted from the partnership of Chester Beach, a mechanical inventor, L. H. Hamilton, a business man and Frederick Osius. Osius isn’t fond of his last name, so it isn’t included in the company name. There first product, made in 1911, was a commercial Hamilton Beach drink mixer used in soda fountains. Other products followed including the Sew-E-Z with electrlc motor in 1912, stand mixers (for making batter), fans, and hair dryers and a portable vacuum in 1925. In 1929, Hamilton Beach expanded with a Good Thinking Catalog.

A commercial spindle drink mixer was expanded in the 1930s to enable multiple milk shakes to be processed at once. In 1934 they received a patent for a manual juice extractor and introduced the third-generation stand mixer. In 1965, was the introduction of an electric knife with a hole-in-the-handle and a blade-release button. This design went on to win a National Housewares Manufacturers’ Association Design in Housewares award the next year.

In 1971, they introduced the ButterUp Popper for pop corn, followed by a HB blender being used in a hilarious Dan Akroyd skit in 1977 that many still remember to this day.

In 1990, Hamilton Beach merges with Proctor-Silex forming Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex Inc., headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. After the merger, the company becomes the largest manufacturer of small appliances in the United States.

Today, Hamilton Beach Brands, Inc. is a manufacturer of home appliances, air purifiers, and commercial restaurant equipment marketed primarily in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, including coffee makers, espressso machines, coffee grinders, and electric kettles.

Hamilton Beach Custom Grind™ Coffee Grinder

This week I have been highlighting products that CoffeeMakersShop.com customers wanted. The Hamilton Beach grinder 80365 is a one touch coffee bean grinder. Its hands free operation makes it easy to use and the five different fineness settings for automatic coffee flavor make it a great value. The settings from course for French press coffee to fine, which is fine enough for espresso machine portafilters. The grinder chamber grinds precisely the number of cup amounts you want from 4 to 12 cups of coffee at a time. It does grind 2 cups of the course grind well, but smaller grind settings work well for 2 cups. In addition, the cover latching mechanism includes an electricity interlock that disables those blades if the cover is not on right and tight when it is plugged in or on battery use; and the coffee grounds do not get in around the lid. The cord storage in the bottom keeps your counter neat and the cleaning brush included does a great job of keeping the grinding blades clean. To clean the chamber, soap and water and then a rinse in the sink will do. Do Not replace it into the grinder until it is fully dry; the moisture can damage the joints of the drive shaft. As for the plastic body, wipe with a clean soft cloth. The stainless steel grinding chamber is removable and is top shelf dishwasher safe.

This sturdy Hamilton Beach coffee grinder weighs a little of 2 pounds (shipping weight is 4 pounds), runs on regular 120 volt household current and stands 7½Inches high; its diameter is 4 inches including the button. A tri-lingual eleven page operator’s manual comes with your grinder; be sure to read it before using your grinder.

Hamilton Beach 10 Cup Stainless Steel Red Kettle

I thought I would write about this Hamilton Beach stainless steel red kettle because it is my favorite. Number one reason is because it is stainless steel. Stainless steel is the only metal that does not leach particles into your water, tea or coffee. This ten cup is a great size. When you want a lot of hot water, it can handle it. However, you can fill it as little as you need and it will heat it faster than a microwave… And, it is safer than a stove top tea kettle – no hot burner (the element is concealed in bottom of kettle) and no boiling dry (the tea kettle has an automatic shut off when the water gets close to empty).

When you fill this electric kettle with water there is a water level window that tells you how many cups are in the kettle so you can fill it to just the amount you want. The opening at the top is large enough to get water into the kettle with ease. The handle has a grooved part on the underside that creates a comfortable balance when you pick up the kettle. The spout is a non-drip spout making it spill free. It also has a lighted on and off switch right under the water level window. Last, but for me, not least is its color. I love bright colors in my kitchen. They perk me up “no pun intended here” while I’m cooking or working in the kitchen. Oh yes, the base of this Hamilton Beach 10 cup stainless steel kettle keeps the cord inside when not in use and leaves the counter uncluttered.

Hamilton Beach Coffee Maker

The Hamilton Beach Voice activated 12 cup coffeemaker can brew fresh coffee with grounds or pods. This smart machine enables you to enjoy a flavorful cup of tea made with tea bags or loose tea leaves. To talk to your brewer press once & talk to set the brew time and brew timer or just press on/off to brew immediately. You can make instant oatmeal – hot cocoa or soup fast in the coffee maker as well. The stainless steel permanent filter is dishwasher safe and the stainless steel accents compliment a classic kitchen style.

The programmable clock/timer allows you to set the time you want to have your cup of coffee, then in 2 hours it automatically shutoffs. Coffee that sits around for more than 2 hours becomes bitter and not good to drink. The auto pause n’ serve is great for getting your first cup as fast as possible from your drip-free carafe and the nonstick keep-hot plate is great for that cup of coffee later on. The easy-view water window lets you see how much filtered water you have in the water tank.

The carafe and brew basket are dishwasher safe and the non-stick keep-hot plate comes clean with a damp cloth. This coffee maker is 12.5 inches long by 7.25 inches wide by 13.5 inches, which gives it room to sit under the kitchen cabinets.

The Right Coffee Maker for your Cup of Coffee

If you are people on the go, a “time” or “auto-brew” feature may be best. This saves you a lot of time in the morning. Set the time you want your coffee maker to brew the night before and your coffee maker will have it ready when you want it. There’s nothing like the aroma of your favorite cup of coffee brewing and ready to be poured into your cup without the fuss of having had to make it that morning. If you want a coffee maker that will also a large pot of coffee, then a 12 cup that will also make smaller amounts may be right for you. There are other time-saving option when one wants espresso and the other wants regular coffee. Both can be ready for you when you want in the morning when you use a dual espresso machine coffeemaker. Tomorrow, espresso anyone!
