Flavors and Spices added to Coffee Today
How you make the coffee from all the different coffee makers makes an added difference in the taste. We have French press made coffee, percolator coffee, pourover drip coffee methods, and espresso machines and other modes to make our coffee. This is just the beginning before adding anything to the beans. However, we can mention at this point that your taste buds may want to add a sweetener and /or a dairy product such as cream, milk, half and half, or soymilk. The flavored creamers available also add to change the taste of your favorite cup of coffee.
We have not even started on the spices that at added to the roasting process or are added as the beans are ground. Sometimes spices are added to hide the bitterness of the taste of the coffee from certain beans. This was certainly the case with the original coffee drinkers. Beans were ground and spices were added because they boiled the beans for hours until there was a thick sludge at the bottom of the coffee maker. The coffee was drunk by straining it through ones teeth. Since the beginning and even today cinnamon is used to sweeten the coffee taste. One must be careful in the amount added here as it may become too sweet or bitter. Cinnamon also absorbs the oils while infusing the flavorful mask of bitterness. Cloves has a stronger taste that adds a woody flavor and rich earthy overtone that makes one of the pleasant scents; this reminds of the scent coming from a home-baked ham. Cardamom remains the most popular spice in Saudi Arabian even today and cardamom coffee, gahwa, remains a symbol of hospitality. Gahwa is crushed green coffee beans and green cardamom pod seeds along with saffron or ground cloves are added along with a sweetener then boiled for two or three minutes. The coffee is then strained through a filter and served. Anise is the last of the oldest spices that were added to coffee and has a licorice-like flavor and odor. Anise, too, has been used for ages to cover up bitter tasting coffee.

Today, nutmeg, is a smooth, sweet, yet highly spicy addition used with eggnog coffee and chocolate (cocoa) flavored coffees. Cloves and nutmeg added to coffee are said to create a pure cup of goodness. Vanilla with its sweet scent and deep flavor has become one of the most used sweeteners in coffee today with French vanilla coming in at a close second. Both do an excellent job of hiding a bitter taste in coffee. Add cocoa to coffee and you have Mocha. Love your real bitter sweet chocolate? Add a little sugar to your shredded chocolate and coffee and you have a rich bodied barista’s Mocha.
Coffee Flavor is derived from Aroma First
All the present day specialty coffee flavor attributes are desired because of the aroma first. This is true with all coffee beans that are sold to be used with coffee making equipment such as coffee makers, percolators, urns or espresso machines.
Instant coffee and decaf coffee have components that are responsible for stimulation of the taste buds. However, instant coffee is different in that it lacks most of the aromatic volatile compounds that create a decrease in the overall flavor of the coffee. The main reason for this is the fact that these coffees are often made with Robusta beans, which is a poorer grade of bean than the Arabica beans. Some instant and freeze dried coffees are sometimes made with a mixer of the 2 kinds of beans. This is just enough mixture to add a slight amount of coffee aroma.
Coffee Makers Develop in the U.S.
Afterward, coffee came to Europe and then America. With the drinking of coffee came the need for coffee makers. There came a series of coffee makers. The first of these was the percolator in 1865. It was the stove top percolator similar to the ones we have today. When it was placed on a hot stove, the boiling water was forced up the hollow stem and over the coffee in a “basket.” Many people still prefer this method as it makes a stronger tasting coffee; however, today, they also prefer electric percolators. Another coffee maker that some still like to use is the vacuum coffee maker, which looks like two pots, one upside down on the other. When heat forms a pressure, it forces hot water up into the top chamber where it infuses with the coffee grounds. When the heat is taken away, the pressure is released and the hot water, now coffee, returns to the bottom chamber. Not too much later the electric percolator was introduced; the French Press coffeemaker was introduced as well. Course coffee was placed in the bottom of a straight container and a plunger with a filter in the center was pushed down and allowed the coffee to come to the top. This is another method that still remains popular today.
The most popular form of coffee maker was introduced by the Mr. Coffee brand of coffeemakers. It is called the “pourover” method coffeemaker. Whether water is pumped over or poured over, hot water is infused with coffee grounds in a basket, usually with a filter that allows the coffee to drip into a decanter below.
Last, but not least are the espresso makers of today. The first one was made in France, but did not work very well. An Italian bought the patent and improved on it. After World War II, the Italians concentrated on the improvement of espresso machines. Today, Italian espresso machines and cappuccino machines whether made in America or Europe, or for the home or commercial use, remain highly sought after.
Best Liked Products
Did you ever wonder what products were liked the most in 2010? I thought you might like to know. There were a great number of different coffee makers.
First of all were the espresso machines. The Pasquini, Saeco, Rancilio and Solis went fast along with espresso grinders to go with them. The most popular coffee maker was the Deluxe Hamilton Beach BrewStation. This coffee maker was sited as the “Best coffee maker” by Consumer Reports.
Other items included hot water kettles, 32 cup coffee maker urns and Toastess 1 cup Coffee, Tea and Hot Chocolate maker with 1 cup mugs.
Espresso Machines
There are a great number of espresso machines disappearing off the market. I wonder which ones will be next. The Bosch espresso machines are all but gone and a number of the Saeco espresso machines have been discontinued as well.
These machines include the Saeco Talea Touch, Nina, Primea Touch Plus, Talea Touch with Milk Island, Ode Giro Orange, Spidem Villa Silver, Spidem Villa Black, Nina Bar and the Renaissance Urn. So why are so many of the espresso machines being discontinued? One of the reasons is the makers of these espresso machines are having a hard time finding quality makers of these espresso machine. Saeco had to return a complete order back to the makers because they did not meet the quality requirements.
I am assuming another reason is the economy around the world. Europe is experiencing a greater economic crisis than the United States. Asia, too, is affected by the economic downturn. Whatever is the cause, this reduction does send a message that companies are tightening there belts. At the same time, you can plainly see that the espresso machines that remain are there best sellers, like the Saeco Royal Coffee Bar Super Automatic, and thus the best quality machines. Shop Smartly.
Presents under the Tree
Everyone enjoys having presents under the tree. The festive lights and Christmas decorations around the house truly lift ones spirits. The biggest problem is choosing the right gift for that special someone on your list. Maybe you have been talking about getting a coffee grinder or even an espresso machine, but wonder which one is the best one to get. The first consideration is the cost, especially with the economics the way they are. However, no matter what you choose there are good coffee grinders at a reasonable price of less than $20 to just under $600.
Espresso machines are a bit more difficult to decide on as there are two types the semi-automatic to the automatics and super automatics. Buying a good quality one is important. If you are a beginner at making espresso coffee you might want to start with a less expensive or get an automatic that is the most expensive, but does most of the work. There is a slight problem with this however; it only makes coffee its way, which may not be to your liking. This is especially true if you have a particular taste you want in your cup of espresso. Good espresso machines run from over $150 up to thousands of dollars. But, a good starter one that will last will still run over the $150 price.
Featured Products
The featured items on an e-commerce website are those that the owner feels are quality products and thus features them. Since there may be many of them, they stagger there presentation. These items do not have any thing in common in particular other than they are good quality products.
Some online stores and shops may feature seasonal products or products that are of the same category. Whether it is new summer clothes in the spring or coffee making products such as coffee makers, espresso machine or coffee grinders. Whatever selection may appear, you can be assured they are products worthy of your attention.
So the next time you are looking for products, be it coffee makers or something else, you will know why they are being featured. That is, featured products are worthy of your attention.
Back Orders
This is a reminder to shop earlier next year. At the end of the first week of December stores and shops had shoppers leaving empty handed as the products they wanted were sold out. This makes it hard on the store owners as well. People get upset and there is nothing we can do except back order. This creates a problem as the makers scramble to provide these products for shipment to there drop-shipper warehouses and dealers for different stores so they can try to get them shipped to customers by Christmas.
Waiting for a Christmas sale may cost you money if you wait for the sale. If you shop on line and want an item for Christmas and you see it is in, but want a discount? Call the shop or store and ask if they will give you a discount. Chances are it may the best thing you could have done.
