Bunn Coffee Maker NHBX-W (White)

I have covered a number of coffee maker companies that have been in the business for close to 100 years. By comparison Bunn is a newer company that has been in the business of making coffee makers for over 50 years. The Bunn Company makes a large range of different coffee makers. This week I will be covering some of them. This reservoir-style household brewer is great for a small office as well. The Bunn Model NHBX-W brews up to 10 cups (50 ounces) of coffee in just 3 minutes. How does it do that? It pre-heats the water for 15 minutes before the first pot of coffee is made. After the first pot of coffee, make sure there is enough water in the reservoir for another pot of coffee.  Then, when you want the second pot the reservoir will  keep the water warm with 34-watt heater and internal thermostat that keeps the water at an ideal temperature to make the second pot in 3 minutes. This ability to make a second pot of so fast is why we add it to our commercial page. Another reason is its stainless steel water tanks 34-watt heater and internal thermostat that keeps the water at an ideal temperature. This coffeemaker is not a drip style, but is one that has a spray-head that improves coffee-flavor extraction. The 800-watt tank heater produces the ideal temperature of hot water that is perfect for making tea as well, while the 46-watt porcelain-coated warming plate keeps your coffee or tea just right for drinking as well after it is made. The sliding lid at the top of the reservoir at the back side of the coffeemaker makes it easy to add brew water. The ten cup glass decanter allows a clear view of your beverage and is dishwasher safe. After the last pot for the day just switch on the vacation switch and the reservoir will no longer pre-heat the water. You will get expert support and service from Bunn. After these 50 years, Bunn does know about coffee makers!

Unlike many coffee makers that come with a one year warranty, this Bunn model NHBX-W coffee brewer comes with a 3 year limited warranty. Be sure to read your warranty and paperwork before doing anything with the coffeemaker and you will be rewarded for it. The coffee maker comes with a 3-prong grounded cord, the glass decanter, filters, a coffee funnel and a de-calcifying tool. (If you have a white build-up (lime) on any part, especially where there is water, use this tool to get rid of it. It deteriorates the material of these parts.) This machine weighs 7.3 lbs. If live at an elevation more than 4,000 feet, put a “D” after the ordering number.

Mr. Coffee TF5 Coffeemaker

Why is the plug on the cord polanized and how do I change the length of the power cord?

This coffeemaker has a polanized plug, that is, it is one where one plug blade is wider than the other. This type of plug reduces the risk of electric shocks. If it does not fit your outlets, call an approved electrician to take care of the problem. DO NOT modify the plug in any way. However, you can modify the length of the power cord to the exact length you want. To do this, follow these instructions:

1. To lengthen the power cord: grasp the power cord (not the power plug) and gently lift it out of the slot, then pull it away from the coffee maker.

2. To decrease the length of the power cord: Grasp the power cord (not the power plug), lift it out of the slot and gently feed it into the coffee maker.

3. When you have the power cord the length you want, lock the cord in the slot when you are happy with the length.

Note: This information also applies to the Mr. Coffee TF5 coffeemaker seen above.

Next week, one more bit of information on the Mr. Coffee TF4 and TF5 coffee makers

Mr. Coffee brand Coffee maker Review

In the early 1970s, the Mr. Coffee® brand introduced the first automatic drip coffee maker. But, the coffee was not as good tasting as consumers wanted. In 1975, Mr. Coffee coffee filters were introduced, the first of many product inventions. The filter were said to have made the coffee taste sweeter and was dubbed as a sweet taste innovation. Mr. Coffee has stayed at the top as number one because they are always adapting to the needs of the consumers. For example, in 1977 the price of coffee skyrocketed and tripled in price. So, Mr. Coffee invented a coffee maker that used less coffee grounds but kept the same great taste everyone loved. The design pretty much stayed the same until 1979 when a timer was added; now coffee lovers could set their coffee maker to brew automatically each morning. After over 30 years of coffeemaker making, Mr. Coffee introduced there single-serve coffee makers for those who want only one or two cups of coffee. This was in 2004. Today, Mr. Coffee remains the largest seller of coffee makers in the world.

What happened to Coffee in America?

Today, coffee is still made using an electric teakettle. But, more and more people are going back to grinding there own coffee again and brewing it by there favorite method. These include the use of an electric percolator, electric drip coffee makers and various espresso/cappuccino makers. Drip coffee makers can be brewed from a one cup coffee maker to a twelve cup one in the home. And, espresso/cappuccino makers for the home are becoming more popular as coffee drinkers look for the best taste in their cup of coffee.

From the privately owned coffee stands to coffeehouses like Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts now use commercial coffee brewers, commercial coffee espresso machines and commercial coffee grinders that will handle high demand use. Whether you enjoy just a morning cup of coffee or are a coffee connoisseur, you do not have to worry about getting your choice of coffee. Coffee is now the second largest commodity sold in the world and a large variety of coffee makers, commercial coffee brewers and coffee machines continue to be built to meet the need of the coffee drinkers.  Tomorrow? Something New.

What Happened to Coffee in America?

What happened to coffee in America was the result of what happened to coffee centuries earlier. There are many stories about the history of where coffee was first found and prepared for human consumption. Although coffee was prepared and brewed many different ways through the centuries, it still remained the coffee coming from Africa and the surrounding area. Around 1720, coffee was taken to places around the world to be grown. The soil and climate changed the character of the bean creating a different bean like the Bourbon, etc. Beans were flavored with spices from the beginning. However, it was not until coffee had come to America that it was sold as a pre-flavored, a mixed blend of beans or as decaffeinated coffee by different brand names. Also, brand named freeze-dried coffee could now be brewed by simply pouring hot water over the crystals from a stainless steel tea kettle. Tomorrow, a brief look at coffee makers during this same time.

Illy coffee was founded by Francesco Illy in 1933. There single blend of 100% Arabica beans from different growing conditions and a mixture of flavors gives Illy a unique taste. Its best when made as an espresso. In 1935, Illy created the first automatic espresso machine coffeemaker.

During World War II, American soldiers are issued instant Maxwell House coffee in their ration kits. Back home widespread hoarding causes the government to ration coffee sales. Another outcome during the Second World War was the revival in popularity of glass and Pyrex globes, since aluminum, chrome, and other metals used in traditional coffee makers had become restricted in availability.

Cappuccino was traditionally a taste largely appreciated in Europe and in America. As cappuccino drinks grew in popularity, large espresso machines in cafés and restaurants were improved in Italy and the U.S. during and after World War II. What happens after Wolrld War II?
