Coffee Makers History Week

Hamilton Beach Manufacturing Company

Founded in 1910, the Hamilton Beach Manufacturing Company resulted from the partnership of Chester Beach, a mechanical inventor, L. H. Hamilton, a business man and Frederick Osius. Osius isn’t fond of his last name, so it isn’t included in the company name. There first product, made in 1911, was a commercial Hamilton Beach drink mixer used in soda fountains. Other products followed including the Sew-E-Z with electrlc motor in 1912, stand mixers (for making batter), fans, and hair dryers and a portable vacuum in 1925. In 1929, Hamilton Beach expanded with a Good Thinking Catalog.

A commercial spindle drink mixer was expanded in the 1930s to enable multiple milk shakes to be processed at once. In 1934 they received a patent for a manual juice extractor and introduced the third-generation stand mixer. In 1965, was the introduction of an electric knife with a hole-in-the-handle and a blade-release button. This design went on to win a National Housewares Manufacturers’ Association Design in Housewares award the next year.

In 1971, they introduced the ButterUp Popper for pop corn, followed by a HB blender being used in a hilarious Dan Akroyd skit in 1977 that many still remember to this day.

In 1990, Hamilton Beach merges with Proctor-Silex forming Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex Inc., headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. After the merger, the company becomes the largest manufacturer of small appliances in the United States.

Today, Hamilton Beach Brands, Inc. is a manufacturer of home appliances, air purifiers, and commercial restaurant equipment marketed primarily in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, including coffee makers, espressso machines, coffee grinders, and electric kettles.

Black and Decker Grinder 100

Did you every have someone unexpectedly teach you something? Something that you were suppose to know, but didn’t. This happened to me the other day. A customer was looking for a specific coffee grinder. He noted that he thought the Black and Decker grinder I had was the exact one he wanted.

After some research, I found this grinder had a specific name that I was not aware of. Not only did I learn the name, but the customer said it has the strongest and best cover of any coffee grinder. After years of using it to grinder dehydrated cranberries the lid does not get all scarred like all the others he has tried. The White Black & Decker CBG100W is also called the Black and Decker “Custom Grind.

Best Everyday Coffee Grinders Price Range

Grinding coffee beans is always essential in making fresh brews, which is why most high end coffee makers now have built-in grinders. There are also grinder models with flavor selectors to help you achieve a brew with your preferred taste and aroma. Grinders come in all ranges in prices from over $200 to less than $20.  A good choice is a burr coffee grinder that will last for a long time, but not be so expensive would be one in the $30 to $40 range.

Cooler Weather Here in the Pacific Northwest

Here in the Pacific Northwest father winter has given us a dusting of snow and last night freezing temperatures to below 30. Today he has lightened up on the cold and given us a nice day. All the same a good cup of coffee tasted mighty good.

I don’t know how many of you grind your own beans before making your coffee like we do. Our coffee grinder has a drawer that you can fill for a day as we do or for the whole week. We prefer the “daily grind.” No pun intended here, but we do grind our coffee every morning for our one pot of coffee for the day. Our dripped coffee goes into a thermal carafe that keeps the coffee hot enough for us for our second cup.

No matter how you like your coffee, I really have enjoyed my coffee a lot more since started grinding it on a daily basis.

If you have a favorite way of making coffee, I would love it if you would share. There so many ways people prefer, but which way is right for you? Fresh ground coffee beans, pre-ground beans or coffee beans ground ahead for a week?

Commercial Coffee Grinders

Commercial coffee grinders are as the name implies; grinders used for commercial purposes. The number one priority from each grinder company is the ability to guarantee uniform grinding with every setting available on that grinder. They are designed for continuous use, fast grind time, long time use with a heavy duty ½ horse power motor to do that. Most are burr grinders, but blade grinders are available. The list of where commercial coffee grinders are used is too long to name them all here. But, to name some of the major spots include coffee houses, tea shops, yes tea houses for those who also enjoy a good cup of coffee, high end short term convalescent  centers, hospitals, restaurants, pizza places, coffee roasting shops and large corporations where they want to serve their clients a great cup of coffee.

The first concern when buying a commercial grinder is what is the need and the amount of use. This immediately leads to the three types of commercial coffee grinders. The three types of commercial coffee grinders are: retail grinders, food service grinders and last, but not lest espresso grinders.
