The History of Saeco International Group

The history of the Saeco Products is more about three men who had a vision and worked together to build a company that would fulfill the needs of consumers worldwide.

Sergio Zappella and Arthur Schmed, who were Swiss engineers created a created a registered company in Italy. They started their business with a proprietary name and then dedicated there time and energy to perfecting technology of the product. The result was a first fully-automatic espresso machine by 1980 under the brand name Saeco. They brought in third partner, Giovanni Zaccanti, who produced coffee machine parts. The following year they established Cosnec Inc. and with this technology, they brought all their manufacturing in-house.

With the business growing, they looked at options to go international. With “climate” and “steam” products in hand, they went international with a Dutch Parent Company, Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands who handles all the marketing. Zappella, Schmed and Zaccanti sit on the board of the Executive Committee of Saeco International Group.

Coffee Makers History Week

Hamilton Beach Manufacturing Company

Founded in 1910, the Hamilton Beach Manufacturing Company resulted from the partnership of Chester Beach, a mechanical inventor, L. H. Hamilton, a business man and Frederick Osius. Osius isn’t fond of his last name, so it isn’t included in the company name. There first product, made in 1911, was a commercial Hamilton Beach drink mixer used in soda fountains. Other products followed including the Sew-E-Z with electrlc motor in 1912, stand mixers (for making batter), fans, and hair dryers and a portable vacuum in 1925. In 1929, Hamilton Beach expanded with a Good Thinking Catalog.

A commercial spindle drink mixer was expanded in the 1930s to enable multiple milk shakes to be processed at once. In 1934 they received a patent for a manual juice extractor and introduced the third-generation stand mixer. In 1965, was the introduction of an electric knife with a hole-in-the-handle and a blade-release button. This design went on to win a National Housewares Manufacturers’ Association Design in Housewares award the next year.

In 1971, they introduced the ButterUp Popper for pop corn, followed by a HB blender being used in a hilarious Dan Akroyd skit in 1977 that many still remember to this day.

In 1990, Hamilton Beach merges with Proctor-Silex forming Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex Inc., headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. After the merger, the company becomes the largest manufacturer of small appliances in the United States.

Today, Hamilton Beach Brands, Inc. is a manufacturer of home appliances, air purifiers, and commercial restaurant equipment marketed primarily in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, including coffee makers, espressso machines, coffee grinders, and electric kettles.

Farberware

This week is talking about companies whose products I sell. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were dedicated to the  Lavazza Company. Today the Farberware Company, which is another one of the old companies like the one I will be talking about tomorrow. In fact, Farberware and this other company have been in business for for almost 100 years.

In December 2007, two long-standing companies Farberware and Black and Decker joined to become Salton, Inc. In 2009, these two brands became part of a conglomerate known as the Russell Hobbs, Inc., which is based in Miramar, Florida.

Russell Hobbs, Inc. and its subsidiaries are leading marketers and distributors of a broad range of branded small household appliances and all products are made in China. In the summer of 2010, Spectrum Brands and Russell Hobbs merged with an approval of the shareholders of Spectrum Brands, Inc., as well as with certain regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. Today, Farberware is hidden in the merger, but still retains it brand name along with conditions on how their products are made.

The LavAzza Company – continued

The LavAzza family has always focused heavily on human, environmental and cultural assets — a focus which has been crystallized in concrete actions taken in Italy and coffee-producing countries. It is here where LavAzza took action because of this coffee crisis, which had drawn the eyes of the world to the hardships faced by coffee growers.

On a local level, LavAzza works to assist the Piedmont region and the city of Turin, where its corporate headquarters are located. They contribute to charities, support cultural activities and work towards developing the region in a number of ways. The most important initiatives involve Consulta, which promotes Turin’s cultural and artistic heritage in the Piedmont region of the city. ADISCO, Italian Association of Donor Umbilical Cord Blood, a group which encourages mothers to donate blood from their babies’ umbilical cords that would have otherwise been discarded.

LavAzza is a company Italy and the whole world of coffee drinkers should be proud of. They are a company that gives back through their LavAzza foundation to not only their community, but to the growers of their coffee in different parts of the world. The coffee shown above is Gran Filtro Dark Roast Drip Coffee.

The LavAzza Company – continued

The LavAzza Foundation remains constant in their commitment to product quality. LavAzza continues to engage in activities aimed at improving living conditions and social and production facilities in areas such as Africa and Central and South America, where coffee production plays a decisive role in the national economy.

An association, created in 2001, by several world-famous coffee roasters, including LavAzza, joined together with the Neumann Group. The Association works with non-government organizations and institutions to develop projects in support of coffee-growing countries.

Tierra was conceived in 2004. This was the first sustainability project directly launched by LavAzza  in three coffee-growing communities in Honduras, Colombia and Peru. Coffee now coming from that region is called Tierra. LavAzza is also involved with Save the Children, a project which aims to protect disadvantaged children from exploitation, by creating educational and recreational facilities in these areas.

The LavAzza Company

Why do I sell LavAzza coffees? The number one reason is not the terrific quality of coffee they sell, but what they do for the providers of their coffee. LavAzza has been getting their coffee from a number of places around the world. The conditions for the workers were terrible.

As early as 1935, Luigi LavAzza felt something needed to be done and created the LavAzza foundation. This foundation created a win-win solution from the farmers who grew and picked the coffee to the LavAzza Company.

The foundation set up co-ops for an area of local farmers so that they could sell their coffee at the same price at the big companies. They also brought in better living conditions, like running water, better housing and better care for the children.

Today, LavAzza is more committed than ever before towards promoting sustainable development, in areas in which it owns production plants and subsidiaries, as well as in coffee-producing countries from which it sources its green coffee.
